It’s often difficult to tell whether your symptoms are dandruff or the more severe form of it, seborrheic dermatitis.

That’s because they have the same root cause. However, you may need more aggressive or intensive treatment to relieve and prevent the symptoms.

Here’s what to look out for:

  • more severe flakes

  • white/yellowish scales – these tend to be more oily than dandruff flakes

  • red, inflamed patches on the scalp

Treat dandruff first
If it’s dandruff, it’s quite simple to treat effectively.Just use Head & Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo with 1% pyrithione zinc every time you wash your hair (preferably at least 3 times a week) for 3 weeks.

Whether you have dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, you should see a huge improvement. But, if after three weeks you don’t have complete relief, you should switch to our selenium sulfide shampoo.

It has been proven to work on all the symptoms of severe dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.

For flaking that does not respond to either treatment, consult with a dermatologist. Other conditions – like scalp psoriasis - can cause flaking which does not respond to dandruff shampoo.
